As a high school student,
I often talked with my mother about the career path I wanted to take, but I was
never sure which one to choose. I could not decide between social worker,
teacher, or counselor. My mother, a registered nurse, suggested that I consider
nursing because it encompasses some aspects of the many professions in which I
had shown interest. My mothers insights led me to choose nursing, and I
have never regretted my decision.
I received my nursing degree
from Towson State University in 1982, and in 1988, I completed my Masters
Degree in Health Care Administration. Later, I obtained my PHR (Professional
Human Resources) certification in human resources. I have worked as a
medical/surgical nurse, home care/hospice nurse, educator, home care liaison
nurse, director of clinical services, director of human resources and currently
the director for staffing services at genesis eldercare. In my present role, I
oversee supplemental staffing, education, recruitment, and our private duty
business line. I have even had the opportunity to publish an article in Nursing
Management.
My mother was right! I can
sincerely say that I have had the opportunity to create and perform a variety
of professional roles. Since I have become a nurse, I have had the opportunity
to be a teacher, social worker, author, and manager, and stay in the same
profession for 20 years
Nursing has allowed me to
make a difference in my community and touch to peoples lives.
