Joan Stickles
RN, BSN
Staff Nurse PCU
Carroll Hospital Center
Westminister, MD

Even though I am 45 years old, my career in nursing is still in its infancy. Nursing is my second career and, unlike my previous career, one that I truly enjoy. My career in nursing is exciting and I have finally found a career that I am passionate about.

My work at Carroll Hospital Center allows me to continually develop my skills and knowledge base. Through my nursing career I am taught skills such as problem solving, and how to interact positively with people. Nursing also helps me grasp a better understanding of the needs of the under-insured and un-insured. Furthermore, nursing has led me to become more proactive in issues that relate to health care both at the local and national level of government. Since I changed my career to nursing, I have become proactive by lobbying for funding, research and education and advocated for people with arthritis through the Arthritis Foundation.

I consider nursing a rewarding and challenging profession.
