"Grow Your Own" Programs

Many school districts have established successful “Grow Your Own” programs to help today’s students become tomorrow’s teachers. Research shows that most teachers made their career decision before college, most likely in middle or high school. School districts that have implemented the program work closely with area colleges and universities and offer teaching experiences in middle and high school, as well as courses that explore careers.

Take a cue from the teachers, and start promoting careers in radiologic technology to the teen-age and pre-teen crowd. Contact local hospitals and clinics to seek out volunteers to speak to classes or at career fairs and other events. Few young people are aware of the profession, and this encounter may be the first time many of them have ever met a radiologic technologist.

To help introduce this profession to students, show videotapes that will introduce the students to the profession. To view online videos on the profession visit https://www.asrt.org/asrt.htm. Note to Guidance Counselors

If you are unable to get a radiographer to visit students at your school, have the students visit a local health care facility. Recommend that they invite middle and high school students to visit the hospital or clinic as part of a career-day field trip. Schedule a special open house for them, and strive to impress them with the technology and teamwork at the facility. Ask representatives from local educational programs to attend as well, so the students can ask questions about admission requirements and the typical course of study.
